Australia’s iconic wine regions provide extraordinary diversity. With the 'Jaraman' range Taylors search for parcels of extraordinary fruit to craft wines that showcase their distinctive regional characteristics and style.

The season leading up to vintage 2015 in the Clare had high rainfall at 14% above the long term average. August was the driest ever recorded and conducive to frost. The first budburst was in late August which is relatively normal. Rainfall in spring was well below average and it was warm & windy causing higher evapotranspiration (water loss). Despite irrigation efforts it still had a detrimental impact on flowering. January was mild with 55mm of rain in the 2nd week. This rainfall had excellent timing as veraison hadn't started, hence very little splitting. The Shiraz responded well to the rainfall for yield & quality. In McLaren Vale, the 2014/15 season was notable for months of no rainfall.

The region had an average winter rainfall, although it fell in a strange pattern. June-July were wetter than average, but no significant rainfall in August. Late August had cold nights, delaying budburst. Spring had the lowest rainfall recorded in the last 20 yrs. Flowering began early & whilst weather was warm, winds were mild achieving good berry. December had low rainfall & it was cooler than normal in January. Temperatures increased in February to above average. Harvesting was very compressed & completed early in just over 7 weeks. Winemakers reported strong regional characters with Shiraz standing out again as a variety that fares well in dry seasons.

The grapes were gently de-stemmed and transferred to small static stainless steel fermenters. Half the grapes were cold soaked at 6 degrees C for 5 days for increased fruit expression. The fruit was fermented at a constant warm temperature using a Shiraz-specific yeast isolate. Gentle mixing using inert gas occurred 2-3 times over the day. The wine was gently pressed to a mixture of American oak hogshead & barrique barrels (30% 1 year old, 70% 2-3 year old) for secondary, malo-lactic fermentation. Post MLF, the wine was transferred back to barrel for maturation before being fined, filtered & bottled in August 2016. Blend percentages - Clare Valley 55%, McLaren Vale 45%

At release, the wine has a deep crimson red colour to the centre with a vibrant purple hue to the edges. There are lifted aromas of red berry and cherry fruit along with subtle black olive and spice.

This is a rich, full-bodied wine with intense flavours of ripe red berry fruit, violets and attractive oak characters of roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate. Overall, the wine is well balanced with complex, well-integrated tannins providing the palate with an intense, persistent length. Winery Notes

Reviews & Accolades

"Fresh and clean, savoury and bright, precise dark berries, easy drinking, fresh, blackberry and blueberry and gentle creamy coffee, vibrant."
Roger Jones How Aussie Shiraz is still flying the flag

"A very solid expression of Shiraz, starting out with aromas of fresh mint, menthol and black cherry in front of a backdrop of leaf and olive. The palate is bold and well- integrated, delivering the nose elements and bringing the fruit center stage. Moderate grip carries the fruit through the finish while keeping the other elements in play. Nicely complex Shiraz at this price point." - 91/100

"Thick and dense, with blackberry and licorice notes that are vibrant and juicy, adding accents of cedar and fresh mint on the finish. Drink now through 2030."
MaryAnn Worobiec - 88/100 Very Good
3 Jan 2017

"Baking spice, dark cherry/berry fruit, sweet vanilla and sprigs of savory herb aromas leap from this stunning multi-region Shiraz. It’s rich, luscious, balanced and beautiful showcasing a dazzling array of ripe fruit flavour with mulberry, black plum and red cherry to the fore adorned with black pepper, dark bittersweet chocolate and hints of eucalyptus. There’s persistent purity of fruit, good structure, complexity and an incredibly long finish and aftertaste."
